Ramadan is the holiest month in any calendar year for every follower of Islam. This is the ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar, which lasts 29 or 30 days, based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon according to numerous biographical accounts compiled in hadiths. The word Ramadan comes from the Arabic root “ramida” or “ar-ramad,” which means scorching heat or dryness. In this holy month of fasting, Muslims refrain from dawn until sunset from eating, drinking, and physical relationships.

In Islam, the thawab or sawab (rewards) of fasting are many, but in this holy month, they are believed to be multiplied. Muslims fast in this month to offer more prayers and Quran recitations.

The festivities start right earnest. Every follower looks forward to this month. Shahjahanabad, is no different. The whole fort area of Delhi is in celebratory mood. The days are sombre, and the place comes alive by sunset!

“Holy Quran [39:6] He created the heavens and the earth in accordance with the requirements of wisdom. He makes the night to cover the day, and He makes the day to cover the night; and He has pressed the sun and the moon into service; each pursues its course until an appointed time. Hearken, it is He alone Who is the Mighty, the Great Forgiver.”
